Governance

WAGA’s governance structure ensures accountability, objective decision making and effective communications and information exchange throughout the WAGA network.

The Executive Committee oversees the governance of WAGA, comprising senior representatives from each member council.

The committee is responsible for:

  • Approving and leading WAGA’s strategic direction
  • Approving major projects and oversee budget decisions
  • Upholding governance practices across the alliance
  • Facilitating political support

The Operational Committee comprises staff from the Environmental and Sustainability departments of WAGA’s member councils.

The committee is responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing projects and initiatives that align with the strategic priorities set by the Executive Committee
  • Facilitating cross-council collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Driving capacity building for staff in relation to corporate climate change programs

WAGA Staff including an Executive Officer and Project Officer, administer WAGA’s day-to-day operations on behalf of the alliance members.  This includes facilitating its organisational and committee functions, knowledge-sharing and managing projects, advocacy and stakeholder engagement.

Working Groups, reporting to the Operational Committee and accountable to the Executive Committee, are also established to implement WAGA’s projects and activities. For collaborative projects, these groups include representatives from project partners; they also often include staff from other relevant council departments.

A host council is appointed to provide facilities, support and day-to-day direction for the Executive Officer and the Project Officer. The current host council is Brimbank City Council.
