Adaptive community assets

The Adaptive Community Assets project was a greater Melbourne climate initiative led by EAGA, supported by WAGA, NAGA and SECCCA, and delivered by Natural Capital Economics with funding support from DEECA/ DELWP.

Covering 32 Melbourne Councils, the Adaptive Community Assets project sought to develop a clearer understanding of the costs and benefits of different adaptation options for community assets and infrastructure owned and managed by councils across Greater Melbourne. This project was delivered in three stages:

  • Phase 1: Cost-benefit analysis framework (2021)
    • Analysis undertaken for each major asset and method to prioritise adaptation actions.
  • Phase 2: Quantifying the economic costs of impacts (2022-2023)
    • Develop financial estimates of the cost of climate change for all participating councils to establish a ‘baseline’ which will assist councils in understanding their risks if adaptation is not undertaken.
  • Phase 3: Cost and benefits of adaption options for roads (2025)
    • High-level estimates of costs and benefits of climate adaptation options for road assets managed by all 32 councils in greater Melbourne
    • Hazard and road asset mapping
    • Workshops to build capacity
