WAGA is proud to present a report on the 2019-2020 climate change projects and achievements of its member councils: Brimbank, Greater Geelong, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Moorabool and Wyndham. The report is intended to showcase work by the councils at the commencement of the 2021-2024 council term and will be updated bi-annually.
All WAGA councils are actively addressing both carbon mitigation and climate change adaptation with strong strategies. Most of these include zero emissions targets. Innovation and leadership are hallmarks of the councils’ actions and projects on-the-ground. They are developing and testing new renewable energy models and technology, adaptation technologies, guidance and training on sustainability. As well, they are continuing to install solar on their buildings and facilities and to upgrade their public lighting to energy efficient luminaires. In 2019-2020, they installed a total of approximately 6,700 kilowatts of renewable energy (solar and batteries) – equivalent to the power required for more than 1,600 homes. They are planning to install a further 5,000 kilowatts in 2020-2021. This is in addition to the participation of most WAGA members in the Local Government Power Purchase Agreement, a collaborative project by Victorian councils to buy renewable energy for their electricity needs.
The report outlines the Alliance’s achievements as a whole, highlights projects by each member council and provides contact details for further information. We invite you to read and share the report, follow the links and get in touch to find out more about our work.
