Highpoint in Maribyrnong was named Victorian Development of the Year at the Property Council of Australia/Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards last week.
The centre was expanded in 2013 with a sustainability focus. Features include:
- A new ‘Eco Mall’ with an attractive ‘Eco-Spine’ roof that is 53% more energy efficient than other areas of the shopping centre
- Upgrades to temperature-control and HVAC systems with temperatures set to reflect the seasons, 100% fresh air ventilation, automated louvres and clerestory windows designed to allow in natural light and breezes
- A green transport plan, including promotion of car-pooling by tenants, installation of end-of-trip facilities for cyclists and promotion of public transport links to staff and shoppers
- Use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified timber and natural stone, re-use of boulders from the construction site in landscaping, and 80% reduction in construction waste going to landfill
- Rainwater and stormwater harvesting
- Targets of 40% reduction on energy use, water use and waste to landfill.
As the west’s largest shopping centre, with 15 million visitors annually, Highpoint is an exemplary showcase of sustainable development for its tenants and the general community.
