Carpool the West

Carpooling just two days a week over a year could save you $750 in fuel and reduce your carbon footprint by 2.6 tonnes – based on an average 100km return journey, which is common for commuters in the WAGA region.

This is the message of Carpool the West, a scheme to be launched on 6 December. Participating organisations are the Cities of Wyndham, Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Melton, Mercy Health, Southern Metropolitan Cemetery Trust, Western Health, VicRoads and Victoria University. Employees (and students) of these organisations can register in the scheme to share their drive to and from work.

Carpool the West is set to contribute directly to the objectives of Low Carbon West, the regional plan for transition to a low carbon economy, and the Western Melbourne Transport Strategy, which aims to facilitate ‘a liveable, productive and prosperous community’. Carpooling could save about 10 kilotonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the WAGA region*. Other benefits include reduced congestion, reduced pollution from private vehicles and safer roads.
