The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) in partnership with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) announced the winners of their inaugural CLIMATE Award on 18 February. The award recognises Victorian-based students, young people and local governments who Collaborate, Lead, Innovate, Mitigate, Advocate, Transform and Empower to help stop the effects of climate change and contribute to the protection of our climate and environment.
Congratulations to Melton City Council, who won in the ‘Local Government’ category for its LEADS project. This is another useful acronym, standing for Lead, Educate, Advocate, Demonstrate Sustainability. It refers to Melton’s popular local community engagement program, which has led not only to a community more informed about how to respond to climate change but to stronger links between community members.
Congratulations also to:
- Darebin City Council, ‘Highly Commended’ for its well-known Solar $aver program, offering cost-effective solar panels to pensioners using the rates mechanism
- Jack Nyhof and Ruby Wynn Williams, secondary school students who jointly won in the ‘Young People’ category for their individual projects.
WAGA was shortlisted for the award for Low Carbon West, the regional plan for transition to a low carbon economy. We will be watching the VLGA CLIMATE Awards with interest in coming years and will certainly consider nominating again next year once implementation of Low Carbon West is well underway.
See the VLGA website for details of all shortlisted projects.
