Low Carbon West Launch

Low Carbon West, a plan for transition to a low carbon economy in the western region, was launched on 25 November 2014.

The plan is a blueprint for action that will guide WAGA’s work to encourage reduction of greenhouse gas emissions over the next decade. It was developed by WAGA with project partners LeadWest and Western Melbourne Regional Development Australia. The plan demonstrates leadership by local government in responding to climate change risks. At the same time, it provides opportunities for businesses and communities in the west to thrive in a changing climate.

Guest speakers at the launch were Professor Peter Dawkins, Vice Chancellor and President of Victoria University, and Mr Geoff Gourley,Director of NuGreen Solutions. Kerry Thompson, Chief Executive of Wyndham City Council and the Project Sponsor, was the MC for the event. A presentation on the content of the plan was given by AECOM and Arup, the consultants who developed the plan for the project partners.

Professor Dawkins spoke of the value of Low Carbon West to the region, while Mr Gourley spoke of the initiatives businesses in the region are already taking to reduce their environmental impact.

The launch was held in the iconic Incinerator Gallery, a building owned by the City of Moonee Valley. This site is a fascinating piece of the west’s history and was designed by Sir Walter Burley Griffin. The Incinerator Art Award: Art for Social Change was on exhibition during the launch.

Approximately 100 guests attended the launch, including Councillors, Chief Executives and other staff of the WAGA councils, representatives from Australian and Victorian Government departments, businesses and community stakeholders.
