Maribyrnong City Council – helping community services and the environment at the same time

Solar success at the Drill Hall…

As part of Maribyrnong City Council’s ongoing commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a 7.5 kilowatt solar system has been installed and lights have been changed over to LEDs at the Drill Hall in Barkly St Footscray. The Women’s Circus and Snuff Puppets, who both operate out of the Drill Hall, will be able to continue their great work in the community with less stress about energy bills. The Drill Hall is a historic and iconic building and now with solar panels it also exemplifies how the council can bring its heritage buildings into the 21st century while supporting its tenants with lower electricity bills.

…and RecWest

RecWest Braybrook is also benefitting from the recent installation of a 30 kilowatt solar system, a lighting changeover to LEDs and other energy efficiency upgrades. These translate to cheaper energy bills, less maintenance issues with a prolonged lifespan for the lighting, and reduced heating costs. Savings of $718 have already been achieved by the solar since the system was switched on last month. YMCA Victoria is a tenant, and the centre joins a growing list of YMCA-managed sites to use renewable energy, as part of the organisation’s commitment to minimising its environmental impact.

…and Footscray Park Bowling Club too!

An 8 kilowatt solar system was also installed at the bowling club, along with a changeover of 50 fluorescent lights to LED panel lighting. Lighting costs have been reduced by almost 50 percent. The initiatives are expected to save the club $3000 to $4000 annually, making it more environmentally and financially sustainable.
